If not, when might we expect a change in operational policy?
To answer your question, I reached out to Oliver Hedgepth, a former professor in the University of Alaska‘s Department of Logistics, who led a number of projects conducted by the Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) to find ways in which RFID could be employed to improve visibility at construction sites (see Alaska’s Dept. of Transportation Mixes Asphalt and RFID). Hedgepth, now a program director and professor at Virginia’s American Public University System, says the shorter answer is that they do not.
“The use of RFID on graders is an experiment only,” Hedgepth explains. “The use of RFID on Alaska DOT equipment is part of its 25-year plan, but not a budgeted practical addition of truck delivery of road material or the grader. You will see more pilot studies before they make a change in such operational policy. I would expect five more years of study.”
