It depends on what you mean by "some piece of hardware." If you mean "some piece of hardware other than the tag," then no. Many types of active RFID transponders can be set to send out a signal, like a beacon, every few seconds or minutes or hours. The signal is received by antennas connected to readers, and they can pass on information to the host system, which then calculates the tag's location. The tag, of course, is hardware, so hardware is needed to initiate the transfer of information.
