I think that would depend on what you mean by "close range." If, for example, you wanted to place RFID tags on hamsters within a 2-foot-by-2-foot cage and show each animal's precise location, then that would not be possible. If, on the other hand, you wanted to tag students working at a laboratory measuring 20 feet by 20 feet, and then track them to within a foot of their exact location, then that would be feasible using an ultra-wideband (UWB) system. And it would require only the creation of an application to display each student's location on a map on an Apple iPad. I don't know if any of the vendors offering UWB solutions have yet created an iPad or Android tablet app, but I do know that a growing number of companies are offering apps on tablets and mobile phones.
