Is there any technology that can track where a product is located, while also monitoring the amount of wear it has sustained?

Radio frequency identification technology can be combined with sensors so that sensor data is transmitted to a reader along with a tag's unique ID number. This enables you to get information about the state of a tagged object. The only system of which I am aware that monitors an item's wear and tear involves sensors put in Michelin tires on London busses to track the tread depth of each individual tire (see Michelin Uses RFID to Track Tire Pressure and Tread for London Bus Company). So it might be possible to track wear and tear via RFID, but it would depend on the product.
