Ask The ExpertsCan RFID Monitor Grazing Sheep?
Ilan Beer asked 3 years ago

I would like to count sheep returning from a field through a gate that is 2 meters wide. The intent is to mount a UHF RFID reader at the gate, about 2 meters aboveground. The RFID tags would be attached to the sheep's ears. Many dozens of sheep may gather near the gate, and several may run through it at the same time. Could a single reader cope with this scenario? And could you recommend a reader that would be able to interface with external hardware and software?

Ilan,

Yes, a passive UHF RFID reader could cope with this scenario. You would likely need to use multiple antennas to ensure complete coverage of the areas through which the sheep pass. Most readers have interfaces that pass data to other software in XML format. You could use middleware to format the data into whatever language and structure you need.
