This would be within a small area, roughly 10 feet by 10 feet. Location is not as critical as speed and whether or not movement has ceased. Can RFID make this determination within less than a second?
It depends on what type of RFID system you are using. Passive UHF RFID is designed primarily to identify a tagged object and inform you that it is in the field of a certain reader antenna, thereby giving you its general location. It is not precise enough to tell you exactly when an item has stopped moving because there may be rebar in the floor, metal in the environment and other environmental factors that influence how long it takes a signal to travel from the tag to the reader.
An active ultra-wideband (UWB) RFID system overcomes this issue by using a battery-powered tag to emit signals at different frequencies. This provides very precise location data. If a UWB tag were set to ping every tenth of a second, it might provide the information you are looking to capture. UWB tags are larger and more expensive than passive tags, so whether or not this is a viable option might depend on the items’ size and how many you need to track.
