I need to measure the distance of passive RFID tags with an accuracy of 1 to 2 meters (3.3 to 6.6 feet) within a range of 20 meters (66 feet). Is there any tested solution that could do this?
An active ultra-wideband (UWB) RFID system can provide accuracy to about 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) from hundreds of meters away. Active systems are, of course, more expensive than passive RFID systems, however. If you are looking specifically for a passive UHF RFID system that can locate a tag from 20 meters away with a 2-meter accuracy, I would suggest checking out RF Controls' overhead reader, or another overhead model that utilizes phased-array or beam-steerable antennas to locate a tag more precisely than standard UHF reader antennas can accomplish.
