If you have a lot of RF and electrical engineering skills, you could probably design your own RFID transponder that can be read from a distance of 1 meter (3.3. feet), but why would you want to do this? There are passive high-frequency (HF) tags based on the ISO 15693 standard that can be read from that distance. These can be purchased via the Internet very easily, and you can also buy readers online. You could also buy passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID transponders based on the second-generation EPC air-interface protocol standard that can be read from 3 to 10 meters (9.8 to 33 feet) away, depending on the environment and what you place the tag on. Tags and readers based on this standard are also widely available.
