That depends. If you wish to place tagged items within the unit, close the door and read the tags from outside, then no, this would not work, as the metal would prevent the reader energy from reaching the tag. But if you want to read the tags using an interrogator located inside the unit, then it might be possible. It depends on the tags you choose (or, more specifically, the chips), as well as the temperature. Many ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) Gen 2 tags can operate at -40 degrees Celsius (-40 degrees Fahrenheit). If your temperature is below that level, then you might require a tag with specialized packaging to enable it to operate. There are some tags that can be pulled out of cryogenic storage and still be read, so that is possible.
