Do the chips ever go bad? And are there batteries that need to be replaced?
An RFID chip is the microchip in a radio frequency identification transponder. These rarely go bad or have issues, but I assume you are asking about the transponder itself. There are potential maintenance issues. With passive low-frequency (LF), high-frequency (HF) or ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) transponders, the devices can withstand heat and cold well, and are unaffected by vibration. But chips can be damaged by electrostatic discharge and from bending, which can cause the connection between the chip and antenna to break, rendering the transponder useless.
Active RFID tags have a battery that can last for up to 10 years, depending on its size, type and beacon rate, but the tags do have to be replaced when the battery dies. Many systems have tags report when the battery is low, so that the tag can be replaced before it dies.
