Is it possible to apply an arbitrary or proprietary coding scheme, regardless of standards?

If you are simply using passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) tags based on the EPC Gen 2 air-interface protocol to track goods internally, then you can develop your own serialization scheme. However, if you are shipping tagged goods to trading partners who require that you utilize the EPC standard, then the serialized numbers in the tags must conform to GS1's Tag Data Standard. To comply, you first need to join GS1 and receive a number representing your company. The company identifier goes before a product identifier, and you must tack on a unique serial number for each product.
