RFID in High Tech 2012 Report

Last month, RFID Journal hosted its inaugural conference and exhibition designed to showcase how radio frequency identification is changing the high-technology industry. View the presentations from the event.
Oct 22, 2012—Radio frequency identification is being adopted for a variety of applications in the high-technology sector, including tracking printed circuit boards (PCBs) during production and testing processes, as well as monitoring IT assets and reducing energy cooling costs within data centers. And this year, Intel introduced a platform for embedding RFID in electronic devices.

RFID provides wireless identification of individuals and assets. Working in conjunction with a firm's information technology infrastructure, a business can use RFID-enabled solutions to track IT assets, individual servers, storage media and other critical business elements. Moreover, the technology is increasingly being utilized to improve such business processes as inventory management and visibility into an enterprise's information systems. To help educate high-tech companies about these developments, RFID Journal hosted its inaugural conference and exhibition this month, designed to showcase these applications.

Maryanne Flynn, Cisco Systems

RFID in High Tech 2012RFID Journal's first event in the Silicon Valley area, held on Oct. 11-12, at the Crowne Plaza San Jose, in Milpitas, Calif.—featured case studies presented by Intel, Cisco Systems, Jabil and other companies. The 100 attendees at the event learned how embedding RFID in products can open doors to innovative applications, how tracking PCBs can reduce labor costs and how monitoring IT assets via RFID can save time and money. The event's sessions demonstrated how radio frequency identification is being used effectively within the high-tech industry, and provided details regarding case studies and ongoing projects at various organizations.

Recordings of the event's speaker presentations are now available in RFID Journal's online video library. Links to videos of the conference sessions are provided on the following pages, along with PDFs of the slides used in those presentations. Note that not all speakers have granted permission to have their presentations archived.
