RFID in Health Care East 2010 Report

View the speaker presentations from RFID Journal's sixth health-care conference and exhibition, held last month in Philadelphia.
Nov 15, 2010—Hospitals across the country are improving patient care, lowering costs and operating more efficiently with the help of radio frequency identification, which has shown that it can provide major benefits to the health-care sector. At RFID in Health Care East 2010, held on Oct. 12, in Philadelphia, Pa., more than 100 health-care professionals heard from hospital executives already using RFID in their operations. Attendees were able to view the latest solutions designed for the health-care and pharmaceuticals industries, and hear real-world case studies showing how the technology can help their organization.

Recordings from some of the presentations are now posted in RFID Journal's online video library, and PDFs of the slides used are also available. Not all speakers have granted permission to have their presentations archived, but as more presentations become available, they will be added below. Due to the large size of some files, it may take a minute or two to download each PDF. Speakers own the copyrights to these presentations, and no materials should be used without their permission.

Lisa Stepps
Optimizing Inventory Management in an Acute-Care Setting
Saint Joseph's Hospital, a 410-bed facility located in Atlanta, Ga., uses RFID technology and a Web-based information system to optimize its management of high-cost medical devices valued at $2 million in the specialty areas of the hospital's Cardiac Cath Lab and Electrophysiology Lab. Lisa Stepps, the hospital's data manager for cardiovascular services, explained how the solution interfaces with several hospital-information systems already in use at Saint Joseph's, employing high-frequency (HF) 13.56 MHz passive RFID tags conforming to the ISO 15693 standard, to link items to a digital database, where they can then be tracked and monitored. Stepps revealed how the system enables the facility to quickly generate real-time reports and analysis, resulting in cost savings and improved charge capture.
