RFID Journal LIVE! Middle East 2010 Report

RFID Journal's second conference and exhibition in the Middle East showed that the technology is beginning to gain attention in the region. View the presentations from the event's speakers.
Oct 25, 2010—The Middle East's adoption of radio frequency identification has lagged behind that in Europe and North America. However, attendees at RFID Journal's second RFID Journal LIVE! Middle East conference and exhibition—which took place on Oct. 5, 2010, at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr hotel, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates—indicated that interest in the technology is beginning to grow in that region.

LIVE! Middle East 2010 featured end users sharing real-world case studies explaining how they are using RFID to improve their business. Attendees learned, from eight speaker sessions, how the technology can be employed in their operations. The conference program focused on how all types of RFID technologies—active, Wi-Fi, passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF), passive high-frequency (HF) and more—can be used to improve operations in the construction, oil and gas, and logistics sectors. In addition, attendees had the opportunity to meet vendors that could help them deploy a successful solution, including Active Identity, BA Systems, Motorola, TagStone, TrackIT Solutions and others.

Recordings from some of the presentations are now posted in RFID Journal's online video library, and PDFs of the slides used are also available. Not all speakers have granted permission to have their presentations archived, but as more presentations become available, they will be added below. Due to the large size of some files, it may take a minute or two to download each PDF. Speakers own the copyrights to these presentations, and no materials should be used without their permission.

Airbus Reveals the Benefits of an Enterprise Approach to RFID
Airbus, the 2008 RFID Journal Award winner for best implementation (see Profits in Motion and Best RFID Implementation: Airbus), has been pioneering best practices in the adoption of RFID by deploying the technology as "business radar" across its operations, from supply chain logistics and transportation to manufacturing and aircraft in-flight operations. This approach, which employs a passive and active RFID reader infrastructure for multiple applications operating on a common software platform, has yielded significant benefits. Carlo K. Nizam, the head of the company's Value Chain Visibility and RFID division, explained how Airbus leverages this business radar, as well as some of the benefits the technology provides.

An A-Z Roadmap for Launching an RFID Project
RFID technologies can benefit a company in many ways, but knowing how and where to begin can be confusing. In this session, Reza Shibli, TagStone's director of product marketing, outlined how to identify potential applications within a business, and how to build a business case that justifies an RFID investment with a strong return. Shibli helped attendees understand the technology landscape, by explaining who the leading hardware and software providers are, as well as how to build a project team and select a solution that can deliver value. In addition, a number of real-world deployments illustrated how RFID is helping companies in the Middle East improve the way they do business.
