RFID Journal LIVE! Middle East 2009 Report

At RFID Journal's first annual conference and exhibition in the Middle East, 150 industry professionals registered to learn how to leverage the benefits of RFID technology. View the presentations from the event.
Jul 13, 2009RFID Journal LIVE! Middle East 2009, RFID Journal's first annual conference and exhibition for that region, drew an attendance of 150 registrants. This year's inaugural event was held on June 15-17, at the InterContinental Hotel Festival City in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

At LIVE! Middle East, companies across the region learned how to get up to speed on radio frequency identification, and how to leverage the technology's benefits. "The theme of the conference," said Muhannad Shaban, sales director of the Middle East and Gulf states for conference exhibitor AeroScout, "is creating good awareness around RFID technology in the Middle East as a whole." Attendees discovered how RFID can be used in their operations, and also had the opportunity to meet vendors that could help them deploy a successful solution.

The conference program focused on how various types of RFID technologies—active, Wi-Fi, passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF), passive high-frequency (HF) and more—can be used to improve operations in construction, oil and gas, and logistics. End-user companies and organizations explained how they employ such technologies to enhance efficiencies and streamline business processes. "The idea of the power of RFID, and what we can do with the technology, is still in its infancy," said Rami Darwish, Tagstone's VP of sales and development, during a keynote address, "in terms of how we take this great technology and implement it in our everyday business."

Several speakers and panelists at the conference have granted permission to provide RFID Journal's readers with the PowerPoint presentations from their sessions—please see the final page to view the presentations.

Training and Preconference
The event opened with a fast-track CompTIA RFID+ training certification preparation course, presented in partnership with RFID4U, a provider of RFID training courses. RFID+ is a vendor-neutral certification that validates a professional's knowledge and skills in the installation, maintenance, repair and upkeep of RFID systems. The course offered at LIVE! Middle East provided an accelerated learning experience designed to prepare attendees for CompTIA's RFID+ training and certification test.

Topics in the one-day, instructor-led training course included RF physics; standards and regulations; RFID hardware, tags, readers and peripherals; design selection; and RFID field deployment. To help prepare for the RFID+ certification process, all attendees received a CD-ROM containing RFID+ practice tests from RFID4U; software features included practice and testing modes, as well as test scoring and review. (For more information regarding how to pass the exam, see How Best to Prepare for the CompTIA RFID+ Exam and RFID Journal Launches Online Training for CompTIA RFID Certification.)

LIVE! Middle East also included RFID Journal University, which provided attendees with a basic introduction to the fundamentals of RFID: the differences between the various classes of tags; when additional IT systems are needed to build upon RFID in real-world applications; an understanding of the EPCglobal Network, the future of ISO standards, ETSI reader regulations and the latest standardization efforts worldwide; and the relationship between different standards in the area of RFID and EPC. A live demonstration of RFID in action was also provided. Presenting at RFID Journal University were Pankaj Sood, founder and manager of McMaster University's RFID Application Lab, and Mark Roberti, RFID Journal's founder and editor.
