RFID Bookshelf

Five new titles, written by experts in their fields, provide useful in-depth information about critical RFID applications and issues.
By John Edwards
Aug 11, 2008—With a rapidly growing number of enterprises recognizing RFID's ability to track and monitor people and things, expedite shipments, streamline production, provide insight and, perhaps most importantly, cut costs, it's no surprise that an almost unquenchable thirst for RFID knowledge has developed. Dozens of authors and publishers are responding with an array of books that promise to provide in-depth information that isn't generally available on the Internet.

Here's a look at five notable RFID books, released over the past few months, that cover a wide range of interests, including anti-counterfeiting, cold chain, logistics, manufacturing, pervasive networks and retail supply chain. All of these titles provide useful information, some more so than others, and most are written by people who have either developed or deployed RFID projects in specific key interest areas.

RFID in Logistics: A Practical Introduction
By Erick C. Jones and Christopher A. Chung
CRC Press, 2008
489 pages

There aren't that many fields in which RFID tools are more widely used, or useful, than logistics. The reason for this is simple: RFID gives manufacturers, wholesalers customers, shippers, warehouse operators, third-party logistics providers and others the ability to track, monitor and manage shipments over a variety of transportation modes, enabling just-in-time scheduling, lower storage costs and reduced fuel expenses.

RFID in Logistics: A Practical Introduction aims to provide readers a step-by-step guide to implementing RFID in specific logistics areas. As an introductory text, the book takes the approach that its readers have only a passing or casual knowledge of RFID systems and methods. Its opening section includes a detailed overview of the history of radio frequency identification, as well as hardware and software components, system design, business and government mandates, and standards and protocols, bringing readers up to date on the technology's current state.

In the book's second section, the authors explain various ways RFID can be integrated into logistics applications. RFID's role in the supply chain, including data analysis, operational strategies, coordination and planning, are all examined. The authors also consider RFID as a key element in the information supply chain, and as an intelligent agent.
