Sep 04, 2006—In cooperation with the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA), RFID Journal held its first annual conference for the apparel and footwear industry, Aug. 15-16, at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York.

The RFID Journal—AAFA Apparel & Footwear Summit was the first RFID conference and exhibition designed specifically to address the needs of companies in this important sector. The event featured case studies presented by companies from around the world, as well as a technology exhibit with solutions for the apparel and footwear industry.

More than 200 professionals attended the conference, including retailers, distributors, manufacturers, consulting firms, systems integrators and RFID vendors. In addition, more than a dozen exhibitors displayed their technologies and services.

The event opened with an invitation-only leadership forum presented by Avery Dennison, who provided an in-depth discussion of the impact of RFID on the apparel and footwear industry. This was followed by an open discussion session in which attendees considered the potential benefits to using RFID and the obstacles to adoption.

Throughout the next day, representatives from numerous firms and organizations provided presentations on how RFID can impact business processes positively in such key functional areas as information technology, supply-chain management, warehouse management and operations. These presenters—AAFA, Attevo, Avery Dennison, Checkpoint Systems, Impinj, Kaufhof Warenhaus AG, Lauren Scott California, LAWSGROUP, Lemmi Fashion, Liz Claiborne Inc., Marks & Spencer (M&S), OAT Systems, Reva Systems, Russell Corporation and VeriSign Corp.—spoke at length about how RFID can (and can't) help companies improve the way they do business.
