RFID Tracks Jewelry Inventory, Shopping With Smart Tray

Hong Kong jewelry brand Chow Tai Fook is employing an RFID-enabled tray from Converge Retail as part of a holistic solution to bring visibility and automation to the manufacture, supply chain and inventory management of its products.

Retailer technology company Converge Retail is releasing a new RFID-enabled version of its digital solution to improve the customer shopping experience, while collecting data and analytics to help retailers better manage their displays and product selection. The company's solution provides content to shoppers as they browse through products such as jewelry. While it traditionally used optical sensors and QR codes to identify the item in which a shopper was interested, RFID makes that process more seamless, the company reports, since it automatically detects which product is being picked up, and thereby prompts the display of relevant data on a touch screen.

Additionally, Converge Retail's newly released Smart Trays enable jewelry stores to automatically capture details about each jewelry item on a tray and when it is tried on, while shoppers can view related information and cross-sale suggestions from an interactive display. The Smart Tray is being employed by global jewelry brand Chow Tai Fook, a Hong Kong-based company, at some stores.

Converge Retail provides in-store shopping experiences for brands and retailers. The solutions include interactive tablet-based displays that enable shoppers to learn more about a product while in a store. The system traditionally uses an optical sensor to detect when someone is looking at a product. For instance, by scanning a QR or bar code, a shopper can view information about a product on an interactive tablet mounted to the retail display. Customers can subsequently send the information to their mobile phone, to conduct additional research or make another purchase after leaving the store. Recently, the company began adding RFID technology to some of its solutions, according to Jason Seed, Converge Retail's COO, in order to make the capture of data more seamless.

Matthew Man
To accomplish the RFID functionality within its existing system, Converge began partnering with Hong Kong Internet of Things (IoT) technology firm Myndar approximately a year ago. "We did not want to become experts in RFID," Seed says, "but we couldn't find a technology that was accurate enough" to ensure each tag on a jewelry item could be detected reliably at short range. Myndar provides solutions and builds its own hardware for the management of jewelry, as well as for health-care products.

The passive UHF RFID tags and readers are custom-made to provide the most accurate read rate. Converge Retail began working with Myndar's CEO, Matthew Man. It now offers the Smart Tray, leveraging Myndar technology, which can also serve as an extension of Myndar's existing RFID solution for jewelry brands. The Smart Tray is a portable jewelry display that utilizes RFID technology to present detailed information about products as they are placed on the tray.
