RFID Helps Bring Outdoor Voices to Shoppers on the Move

The Texas-based store sells its products via an app, thanks to an RFID solution from Nedap, making it easier for active people to buy goods while on the run.

Active wear brand Outdoor Voices (OV) has deployed an RFID-based solution across all of its stores within a matter of weeks, in an effort to increase the visibility of its inventory and thereby enable omnichannel services, as well as in-store availability. The solution employs Nedap's !D Cloud solution, running on a mobile device, including its cloud-based software platform, as well as Avery Dennison tags (with a UCODE 7 IC) on products, and Zebra Technologies handheld readers in each store for associates to capture inventory counts.

Outdoor Voices is on a mission to get the world moving, according to Nate Peterson, the company's VP of supply chain. "At Outdoor Voices, we believe that the future of athletics is not about being first," he says, "but the most frequent." This, Peterson notes, differentiates OV from other activewear companies that often promote a harder, better, faster, stronger mentality, which adds pressure to activities. "Our mission in action, 'Doing Things,' is meant to bring joy, ease and delight back to activity. Moving is winning."

To reach customers wherever they may be (on a cycle trail or in a park, for example), the women's and men's athletic apparel brand has a focus on e-commerce first, followed by retail. The company deployed RFID across all of its stores in October 2019, following a three-store pilot that spanned three months. Once the pilot was completed and the results were proven, the deployment at the other stores took two weeks, says Hilbert Dijkstra, Nedap's director of business development for !D Cloud in the Americas.

The system has proven to increase sales in stores, the companies report, based on the more accurate inventory data provided. Traditionally, if an item was not available at the right location when needed, that could impact customer satisfaction. Now, the improved visibility better ensures that OV can identify where each product is, and that every customer can be assured the product he or she seeks is available. The company has also reduced the amount of safety stock kept at each store, which had previously been intended to prevent out-of-stock issues.
