U.K. Rolls Out RFID for Used Tire-Management Pilot

Waste-management software from Topolytics will capture data regarding each tire collected for recycling or reuse with PragmatIC's new ConnectIC HF RFID chip and its handheld readers, to enable real-time management of the waste supply chain for tires.

Topolytics and PragmatIC will participate in the second phase of a U.K. government initiative to track and manage waste as it moves through recycling or disposal processes, with RFID tags applied to hundreds of thousands of tires.

Topolytics, a waste digital analytics company, is providing its software to manage multiple projects, including the disposal or recycling of tires. The tires will be tagged with adhesive labels leveraging PragmatIC's HF RFID ConnectIC flexible integrated circuits, which will be read via PragmatIC readers. The rollout, running for 12 months starting in November 2019, follows a smaller first phase of the technology deployment from earlier this year, according to Alastair Hanlon, PragmatIC's chief commercial officer.

PragmatIC's ConnectIC family of RFID circuits includes two HF RFID products intended for embedding in paper and plastic. These products, designed using single-layer antennas, are intended for such market segments as food and beverages, personal and home care, supply chain management and goods authentication, the company reports.

The U.K. initiative, known as GovTeh, is a government program that funds innovation to solve public-sector problems using cutting-edge technologies. The project is being managed by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. It focuses on ways to better track waste items, ensuring the waste supply chain remains transparent and efficient, and that loss is prevented.
