Internet of Things Brings Intelligence to Hot Tubs

Jacuzzi Brands' SmartTub System features an IoT device from Particle, as well as an app and a Web portal, so hot-tub owners, service providers and Jacuzzi can view data regarding a particular tub's operation and remotely send instructions to adjust that unit's settings.

Jacuzzi Brands LLC is selling a connected hot tub that employs cellular-based Internet of Things (IoT) technology to help the company, as well as dealers and consumers, better manage the operation and maintenance of its hot tubs long after they are purchased. Since the SmartTub System—which was provided by IoT technology company Particle—was taken live, it has allowed Jacuzzi to view how its products are being used and maintained.

Dealers, meanwhile, can access data about maintenance or repair needs, while consumers can manage temperature controls and other functions remotely. That means potentially reducing energy consumption by identifying how much power a tub is using and adjusting its settings when the unit is not in use.

The company released its SmartTub System about a year ago for newly assembled hot tubs, but it plans to retrofit the majority of its tubs by 2024 with the IoT connectivity, according to Larry Ovalle, Jacuzzi's marketing director for strategic growth. The firm predicts the solution could save the industry millions of dollars with better predictive maintenance that prevents failures, while also reducing energy consumption.

Jacuzzi Brands partners with distribution companies not only to sell its products, but also to ensure that they are being correctly maintained so that they will operate properly. Ensuring proper maintenance may be in the interests of Jacuzzi, its partners and its customers, since it could reduce the risk of a hot tub's performance failure.

The SmartTub System is intended to bring greater control to those parties after a tub is installed in a user's home, Ovalle explains. Jacuzzi Brands engineered the solution with Particle at the IoT company's design division, Particle Studios, according to Derrick Du, Particle's head of customer success. During the course of six months, Particle developed a plan for the technology, then designed and built the device, after which it was tested with Jacuzzi's products.
