RFID Provides On-the-Job Training, Accountability at South African Mines

Aury Africa, a mining equipment and services provider, has deployed an RFID-based solution from Thembekile at three of its customer sites to date, providing an automated way for its personnel to access and input data about the work they do, as well as creating an automated record.

Mining equipment company Aury Africa is deploying passive UHF RFID technology at some of its customer sites to capture automated data regarding the services Aury provides to the equipment it sells to mines. Initially, the RFID technology has been installed in three South African mines to help track service data and share that information with mine operators.

The RFID technology, using InfoChip software, was developed for Aury Africa by its Johannesburg technology partner, Thembekile Asset Management Solutions (AMS). The system not only allows the company to track when services are provided, but also enables some self-learning for its crew, while ensuring regulatory compliance for the mine. Thembekile has offered active and passive RFID-based solutions for the mining industry, as well as the health-care and logistics sectors, since 2012, according to Dean Parkhouse, the company's business-development director.

Aury Africa sells screening, centrifuges and other vibration equipment solutions and services to coal and other mines in Africa for use in extracting and filtering materials. The equipment it manufactures and sells is typically purchased outright by the mining company; however, Aury Africa offers a value-added service of inspecting and maintaining the equipment to ensure it continues operating safety and efficiently.

"As a supplier of high-quality mineral processing equipment, we serve numerous sites at any given time," says Syd Parkhouse, Aury Africa's managing director. (Syd and Dean Parkhouse are relatives, though Thembekile and Aury Africa are not formally connected, they indicate.) Aury Africa's inspectors and maintenance personnel come onsite to mines at scheduled intervals to ensure the equipment will operate properly, but also to provide each mine with certification about the inspections of the equipment that they can share with the South Africa Department of Mineral Resources (DMR).
