Automated Decision is leveraging its NFC RFID-based solution, using HID Global technology, to service companies and facility managers, providing visibility into inspections and maintenance of fire-prevention equipment and other assets.

RAEL Sprinkler, an 85-year-old fire-protection service provider based in Hyde Park, N.Y., is selling a Near Field Communication (NFC) RFID technology-based service to track the maintenance and inspections of life-safety equipment in New York commercial buildings, including in one of the tallest skyscrapers in Manhattan. The skyscraper is part of a complex of buildings its owners have asked that it remain unnamed. The system consists of 1,200 tags affixed to valves, pumps and sprinkler systems, which service personnel read via mobile phones, as well as data-management apps and software to create an automated record and verify the work being done on site.

The solution is intended to automate the process of data collection regarding maintenance and inspection of the building's fire and safety sprinkler system. Since it was taken live, the system has made maintenance and inspection faster, with fewer repair calls necessary since the maintenance work is being performed on time.

The HID Global Trusted Tag Services system is being deployed by Automated Decision, the technology provider for RAEL Sprinkler's maintenance services. In the case of the skyscraper installation, the building's facility-management company, The Durst Organization, approved the project and ensured that NFC tags were properly affixed to the equipment within the building.

The solution is intended to ensure compliance with building, federal, and local fire and safety regulations, says Brian Kohler, Automated Decision's president, by improving the visibility of maintenance records and automating maintenance schedules. Automated Decision provides work-order management related to the maintenance of RAEL's sprinkler systems including inspection checklists, repair history and equipment information It offers a mobile inspection app so that sprinkler maintenance providers can easily access data about the work to be done at a specific site.
