Cashew Company Improves Deliveries, Supply Chain

Thanks to Ceará Votu's UHF RFID solution, Cione has streamlined processes, monitored its supply chain and ensured 100 percent accuracy in its deliveries.

Cione, a Brazilian cashew producer founded in 1963 in Fortaleza (CE), is celebrating the results of its investments in radio frequency identification technology. With the EPC ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) solution it deployed from Ceará Votu RFID Solutions, the company reports that it has been able to streamline processes, monitor the supply chain and ensure 100 percent delivery accuracy.

Cione, a company dedicated to the planting, harvesting, processing and marketing of cashew nuts, exports almost 95 percent of its product—which comes to approximately 275 tons monthly. The nuts are packed into boxes weighing 22.68 kilograms (50 pounds), for an total of 12,125 items per month.

A site survey conducted at Cione
Prior to the RFID system's deployment, processes were significantly slower and less accurate, according to Edmilson Carneiro Moreira, a Ceará Votu RFID Solutions investing partner and a professor of telecommunications at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Ceará (IFCE). "There was a noticeable decrease in the time used to identify the items in the movement processes," he states. "Each item was previously identified through a combination of bar codes, now being made with a single smart tag that stores its unique EPC number."

In addition, Moreira explains, because Cione exports most of what it produces, the system allows customers and their respective logistics operators to also use RFID tags to identify the items in their processes, thereby ensuring greater automation, security and traceability of these goods. "It ends up diluting the costs of the labels still in the factory [and the RFID infrastructure] to the entire chain," he states.

In this way, Moreira says, the entire cashew supply chain can improve its operational efficiency by reducing costs and increasing the accuracy of logistics processes. Since the deployment complies with the passive EPC UHF RFID standard developed by GS1, there are benefits to the entire chain, he explains. "These benefits consist of the identification of each product, bringing management to a more advanced level and allowing for the location of each product individually at any spot along the chain," Moreira says, "thus giving greater visibility of the stock and operational processes."
