European Study Finds Growing RFID Market in German Automotive Industry

Research Solutions surveyed 95 RFID technology providers for the German market and found that companies that already have a foothold with automotive original equipment manufacturers own the majority of RFID products and solutions.

European consulting firm Research Solutions has conducted research which has determined that the use of RFID for work-in-progress (WIP) in the German automotive manufacturing industry is wider and more prevalent than expected.

The research, conducted this past summer, found that nearly 100 companies sell RFID-based solutions or technologies to German manufacturers. When compared against similar research conducted in other countries in previous years, the researchers say, the study indicates that the market has been growing fast in this sector.

"We conducted this market research specifically for Germany, in order to be able to shed some light on the peculiarities of the German market for RFID systems," says Leo Gergs, Research Solutions' key account manager for Germany. The researchers determined that the most prominent application sector was in industrial and plant automation for the automotive industry. Gergs previously studied the French and Italian markets and found very different areas of growth based on different vertical markets.

While RFID technology is gaining the most traction in the retail industry in Italy and some other parts of Europe, in Germany the technology is being used most often for industrial applications, especially in automotive production. The study found that most RFID components are in use by German original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
