Integration Brings Wi-Fi-Enabled Data from Pumps to RTLS

Stanley Healthcare is offering integration with Baxter infusion pumps so that users of the MobileView RTLS solution can track each pump's location and status without RFID tags.

Stanley Healthcare's AeroScout Asset Management system is integrating infusion pump data from medical device company Baxter, allowing hospitals to track each pump's location and status in AeroScout's MobileView software without requiring a radio frequency identification tag. The integration allows Baxter's Wi-Fi-based data to be received, stored and displayed for users of the MobileView platform.

The first customer of the integrated system was Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC), located in Salisbury, Md. In fact, the company helped to conceive the solution when it was using the AeroScout tag-based real-time location system (RTLS) throughout its facilities, as well as Baxter's Wi-Fi-enabled software for its pumps.

Jeff Guyot
The integrated solution brings greater understanding of assets and their conditions onto a single platform, says Jeff Guyot, Stanley Healthcare's manager of health-care solutions and analytics. With the integration, he explains, Baxter data transmissions are received by MobileView software and displayed for software users. "It allows clinical and biomedical staff to locate pumps without having to affix an asset-management tag to the pump," he says, and also provides the status of those pumps. "It tells them where the pump is, and if it's in use."

Eric Sato
For several years, the Baxter Sigma Spectrum pumps have come with Wi-Fi functionality to transmit data, along with each pump's unique ID number, explains Eric Sato, Baxter's marketing VP. The pump data not only provides real-time data, but also enables the collection of historic information about utilization rates.

PRMC has a relatively long history using technology, from Stanley as well as Baxter. The company first acquired the MobileView solution from AeroScout (now called Stanley Healthcare) in 2009, to gain sufficient visibility of its pumps to reduce the number needed onsite. The hospital aimed to buy 50 fewer pumps than usual—which, at a cost of $5,000 apiece, would save the company $250,000. By using MobleView to track the hospital's smaller pool of pumps, the firm expected to make it possible for nursing and biomedical personnel to easily find them when they were needed.
