Polish Cancer Center Tracks Drug Temperatures via a Real-Time NFC-enabled Solution

The system, from Bluog and Utz Group, includes NFC-enabled data-loggers, Near Field Communication readers attached to containers, and a cellular or Wi-Fi connection to software managing the read data.

The Lower Silesian Oncology Center, a Polish cancer treatment facility, has automated its drug temperature management system with a Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled solution provided by Blulog and Utz Group.

The system—which employs using Blulog NFC-enabled sensors and software, as well as Famoco readers and Utz Group containers—enables the hospital to capture and analyze the temperatures of its medications as they are transported and stored, thereby ensuring that they never fall outside safe temperature ranges. The technology also provides a record of the temperatures to which drugs were exposed, which can be shared with regulatory bodies.

Piotr Steciwko
Last year, the hospital began using the NFC-enabled containers to track ambient temperatures as those containers are transported or stored, in order to further automate data collection. A temperature sensor tag is placed in each container, while an NFC reader is attached to its exterior side.

The Lower Silesian Oncology Center treats patients for cancer using cytotoxic (anticancer) drugs. Its Drug Preparation Laboratory makes the cytotoxic drugs and delivers them to the Clinical Public Hospital in Wroclaw, or to two affiliated hospitals in Legnica (located about 43 miles away) and Jelenia Góra (located 68 miles away).

The Clinical Public Hospital provides oncological surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and diagnostic services, such as mammography, biopsy and ultrasound. Its drugs and other temperature-sensitive products can be stored in warehouses, diagnostic laboratories and operating rooms, as well as in cabinets and research areas.
