Companies worldwide are employing radio frequency identification across a variety of industries to improve efficiencies and customer service, and to reduce expenses. At RFID Journal LIVE! 2014RFID Journal's 12th annual conference and exhibition, held on Apr. 8-10, at the Orange County Convention Center, in Orlando, Fla.—visitors attended presentations from more than 50 end users regarding new applications for RFID. These sessions explained how to overcome implementation challenges, achieve business benefits, and track and manage assets.

Attendance was up this year in retail and manufacturing, as well as from large companies, with several retailers and apparel suppliers attending for the first time. Total attendance increased by 5 percent to about 2,800, with a rise in the percentage of RFID technology buyers over previous years. Overall, the number of companies looking to purchase RFID systems was up by more than 10 percent. Visitors hailed from 53 countries, up from an average of 45 percent for the past few events, suggesting adoption is picking up worldwide. And attendance from Latin America, in particular, saw a noticeable uptick, suggesting that region is starting to embrace the technology (see The RFID Barometer).

This year's LIVE! event, cornerstone-sponsored by Motorola, featured four industry-specific conference tracks (Manufacturing, Retail/Apparel, Defense/Aerospace, and Health Care/Pharmaceutical) and four how-to tracks (Innovation, Technology and Infrastructure, Supply Chain/Logistics, and Visibility/Traceability). In addition, the conference included eight preconference seminars, four post-conference workshops, and one co-located event, IEEE RFID 2013.

During LIVE!, visitors had the opportunity to receive Fast-Track RFID Deployment Training and RFID Applications Developers Training, provided by RFID4U, and to take a beta test to become certified by the International RFID Institute (see A New RFID Certification). Those in attendance could also view the entrants in the Coolest Demo Contest, as well as the finalists for this year's RFID Journal Awards.

Recordings of the event's speaker presentations are now available in RFID Journal's online video library. Links to videos of the conference's keynotes, as well as the pre- and post-conference seminars and workshops, are provided on the following pages, along with PDFs of the slides used in those presentations (not all speakers have granted permission to have their presentations and/or slides archived). Videos and PDFs from the main-conference and solution-provider sessions, as well as the RFID Journal Awards and the Coolest Demo Contest, will be spotlighted in part 2 of this report, to be featured next week.
