What Type of RFID Tag Is the Most Stringent for Wine and Spirit Anticounterfeiting?

Which tags would be best for identifying and tracking wines?

Glen,

There are several tags available on the market that are designed to identify and track wines. EVRYTHNG offers a complete solution, with an app that potential wine buyers can use to authenticate wines. This app is being successfully used by Pinea Wine (see NFC Brings ConnectedBottle Solution to Winery; this article requires a premium membership to view it).

Amcor Capsules is selling a solution known as InTact, a Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled capsule that can be fitted over a corked bottle of wine or spirits. The capsule stores a unique ID number to authenticate a bottle, and a tamper-evident feature in the NFC tag lets users know if the capsule has been removed. The NFC technology, including the tag, software and app, is provided by anti-counterfeiting technology company Selinko (see Tamper-Detection Capsule Brings Security and Marketing to Wine Makers).

If you want to read tags from further away for inventory-counting purposes, I would suggest you look at a tag being offered by R-Pac, which uses a passive UHF RFID transponder with a read range of 15 feet or more (see R-pac Releases EPC UHF Label for Spirits, Wine, Cosmetics). The unique IDs can be linked to a database with which distributors and retailers could authenticate wines, but individual shoppers would not be able to read the tags since no smartphones currently contain passive UHF RFID readers.

RFID Journal LIVE! 2020 will be held in April, and there will likely be additional companies at the event offering tags designed for wine and spirits.
