What Requirements Are There in India Covering 433 MHz Active RFID?

Posted By RFID Journal, 10.22.2019

I know that 433 MHz is the worldwide ISM band and also the best frequency for finding and locating tags under severe conditions. In this context, are there any government regulations prohibiting the use of 433 MHz active RFID tags and readers in India for various applications?

Ram,

The Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT) requires all companies to obtain a license before they can use any part of the radio spectrum. There are only a handful of exceptions to this rule, including the use of Citizens Band in the 27 MHz range and the Wi-Fi bands in the 2.4 GHz and 5.8GHz ranges. India's National Telecom Policy of 2012 stated that the country needs to reserve more frequencies for unlicensed use, but to my knowledge, there has not been much progress. I believe that to use the 433 MHz band for an active RFID system, you would need to apply to the DoT for a license.
