What Shelf Design Works Best With RFID?

With regard to a new RFID-compatible materials shop, what should be the space/gap/distance between two shelves? Can we obtain a sample layout showing how to arrange the shelves? And are there any specific shelf designs we should use?




I would say you are thinking along the right lines in considering these issues. However, the answers depend on the solution you choose. My suggestion would be to do the following:

Find a good systems integrator that can work with you on the project. Work with the integrator to come up with a rough cost for using overhead fixed readers in front of shelves and handhelds. Determine the potential benefits of using RFID to track your parts. If one system clearly makes more financial sense than the others, create a mockup of a shelving area in one of your facilities to do some testing. If more than one option could make financial sense, create several shelving units and test the different approaches to determine which will work best for your operations. Then, make a determination of which system to use and how to lay out the shelves.

Given the difference in facilities and business processes, there is no off-the-shelf solution that will work for your application. But you can design and build something that will be cost-effective and deliver what you need.
