November 3, 2004—According to a quote in TruckingInfo.com from Wal-Mart's Information Systems Division VP Carolyn Walton, the retailer welcomes all its suppliers, including those not currently bound by the RFID mandate, to begin implementing an RFID tagging infrastructure as soon as they wish. Said Walton, "They're ready; we're ready; there is no need to wait." Contrary to many people's perception, she continued, there will be no "gigantic switch" flipped on January 1 that will turn on the retailer's RFID capabilities. Its systems are ready to accommodate RFID tagging now, so suppliers should not feel the need to wait for an explicit invitation or mandate to begin.
