RFID school system

Hi. I'm working on a school project to implement an RFID system in a school building to track students in order to know how many people are in each room.
I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good middleware for this? Also, any good tags and readers? I was thinking of using the UHF tags to get a range of about 10 feet, which I figured was enough for a doorway. Any advice would be very much appreciated.
