The importance of privacy
by ANDREW MARKER, posted 01/25/2003
RFID offers consumers many potential benefits. Broadly speaking, products should cost less because there will be less waste in the supply chain. RFID can protect consumers from buying products that have passed their sell-by dates. It can ensure that the wrong drug isn't administered to a patient. One day, it may even be combined with low-cost sensors to protect us from tainted meat and other problems. But consumers also have legitimate fears that a small minority of companies will abuse the technology to invade their privacy. This bulletin board is meant to be a place where both sides of the debate can express their views and be heard. I hope people will use it constructively.
