Missed physics 101

This is all so exciting but...it just won't work. Libraries have proven the problems with the existing cd/dvd tags to date. The problem also exists with the EM strips "patented" by 3M for an extention to their tattletape solution - They spin off and don't work with many players. The problem is really one that shows up on DVD more than Cd media. Because DVD spins up to 10 times faster the centrifugal force causes balancing issues. Even if the tag stays on it causes balancing issue. Due to the requirements of MPEG 3, or MPEG in general, if their is a corruption or "disruption" of historical data, the whole thing goes down.

If one looks at a DVD player you will see the little springloaded adjusters in the middle to assist with centering. The media is not NASA certified and the "roundness" and balance of the media is not "perfect enough." While software and hardware tweaks have been made to reduce this problem it they will not handle a lablel that causes balancing issues.

The bibliotheca tag, while being proprietary and therefore limited in its potential uptake, will fail on DVD's, or many of them. By solving a read range problem well described in the article they have created a revenge effect with regard to the more fundamental problem being manufactures of the this type of tag are facing - balance.

If you have ceiling fan at home try taping a very light weight on one of the blades (turn the fan off first of course:) Now turn the fan on low. Everything seems pretty good (think cd) Now crank-it-up to medium. Hmm, a bit of wobble. On high you may want to get out of the room as the thing starts to tear from the ceiling.

Congratulations to Bibliotheca on a technical success for what it wanted to solve - marginal improvement in read range. Shame on them for furhther muddling the problem and actually increasing an already problematic solution.

Beware and test test test this out before you by a boatload of them!
