record date, time

I would like to design a simple system that will record in and out flow of stuff/files from a room. My major interest would be in recording date, time and basic information on who take in/out the stuff.

How do i implement rfid reader in such situation? What suitable equipment needed?
Do i need to use rfid reader which have "read and write" function or i can basically use rfid reader with "read only" function
