RE: RFID tag+reader range and price
We are currently a reseller for Thinmagic's USB reader. It is UHF and has a 12 inch read range that goes for about $500. If you are looking for a home project, ThinkGeek carries LF RFID kits for about $100. Problem with that is you only get 4 inches of read range.
