RFID tag+reader range and price

I am currently searching for an inexpensive RFID tag and reader combination that can read up to 15-20 inches. I've done research and most are High frequency and the reader alone is going to cost about $500. If anyone could lead me in the right direction to a website or specific model number that would be amazing?
