Should airports switch their existing baggage-handling syste
by DAVE RENSBERGER, posted 07/21/2008
I think this question is somewhat silly.
I don't think hardly anyone who travels disagrees with the idea of RFID being used to track their baggage. I'm guessing you'd even win over some of the normally anti-RFID crowd if you could prove that it results in a decrease in lost luggage. The much more interesting question is how to implement it. This seems like more of a political challenge than a technical one. To truly be useful, a baggage tracking system has to be ubiquitous and I suspect that getting all of the airports and airlines to agree on standards that would make such a system work would require a herculean effort.
