Article Link: Return on Innovation

ROI and RFID
by CHRIS KAPSAMBELIS, posted 09/18/2007

The reason that there is no positive ROI with RFID is because the promise of full automation, described by early advocates like Kevin, never materialized. Shelf Readers, and Portal Readers have been proven to be impractical and error prone, forcing innovation in the direction of Hand-Held Readers and Tunnel Readers where the emphasis is in reading items in singulation mode(one at a time). Without the promise of group reading, the efficiencies envisioned by ‘The Internet of Things” are unattainable.

When it comes to data capture in singulation mode(one at a time), the use of Barcode has a distinct advantage over RFID. Not only is it significantly cheaper, the fact that it requires “Line of Sight” guarantees that the data comes from the item aimed at, and not from other items in the vicinity.
