There is no simple public policy solution

The author does a good job of highlighting one of the reasons that RFID has been below expectations in the pharma industry.
However, the proposed solution is also too simplistic. RFID would only have value as an after-the-fact tracing device if the tag is read and authenticated at the end of the supply chain, i.e., the pharmacy. So far, that does not seem to imminent. Furthermore, retail pharmacy dispensing is regulated by individual states, which license wholesalers and pharmacies. Giving the FDA power to mandate RFID would represent a major power shift from the states to the federal government. I'm not a constitutional scholar, but I suspect such a power shift would be anything but simple. I have been writing about RFID in Pharma on my blog.
