Read Rate Efficiency
by CHRIS KAPSAMBELIS, posted 05/15/2006

As we progressed from Generation 1 to Generation 2, the RFID group read rate has been stuck at 80% or less. Starting with the original field studies conducted by the AutoID Center of MIT, to the pilot results at WalMart and DoD, the conclusion of most practitioners is to limit the number of tags in the reading field to one at a time. Since Physics is the problem, Generation 3, 4 or Generation X will not be a solution.
Can RFID be justified without the efficiency of group tag reading with six sigma accuracy?
RFID is not the only way to implement EPC. Data Matrix is just as good and the “tag” is practically free.
