"Tracking Device Compliance Labelling"Legislation

J. GIRVIN, 01.20.2006 3:01:19 am

The "Tracking Device Legislation" article states - that the RFID tag contains some form of unique indentification or other data on the consumer unit or identification document which may need to be remotely read without the user's knowledge or consent.
My recommendation is - that when the manufacturer, in complying with the legislation, adds a label with an "universally accepted symbol" to denote inclusion of the RFID transponder, they also print for no extra cost a very small 2D Matrix code on the same label containing the same unique information as in the RFID tag. If the data nevers needs to be updated, the 2D Matrix code as a data carrier, will serve the same purpose as the RFID tag and provide the added benefit that the consumer will always have to provide consent to the data being read as it uses line-of-sight optical reading technology.
The manufacturer may then review why he had to go the expense of using RFID tags in the first place.
RFID tags have their advantages as do 1D/2D barcodes.
