What consumers really want
by Willem Galle, posted 05/15/2005

Consumers want more freedom not less! Consumers have shown that they are willing to buy quality even if a free version is available. So a better strategy for digital content, particularly motion picture, would be to release a low resolution version on the internet first for free. Gauge peoples reaction to the internet release to fix any problems with the film before final release. The people who view pirated versions will never pay anyway so giving them something legal instead will satisfy their need and they won't seek the hi res version. The final release should be delivered in a compressed and encrypted tar ball with a unique key for each sale so any tar ball can be traced back to a purchaser. The uncompressed files will of course be huge to discourage copying! The tar ball opens into unrestricted files so the user is free to play them any way they wish. The people who buy would continue to buy and possibly more people would buy since they get what they want, no restrictions.
