Can RFID Be a Lock For a Notebook?

Posted By RFID Journal, 03.17.2010 Post a Comment!

Is it possible to use radio frequency identification in this manner?

I assume you are referring to a notebook PC. There has been some research conducted into the possibility of employing RFID to lock electronic equipment so that it won't work unless a password is transmitted to the tag embedded in a circuit board within the device. For a computer, the RFID tag might need to have a physical connection to a BIOS chip, which controls the computer's startup function. I am unaware of any company that has yet commercialized such a solution, however.
