Can RFID Create Enclosed Perimeters?

Posted By RFID Journal, 06.18.2009 Post a Comment!

Is there a flexible system to create an enclosed perimeter using RFID technologies? For instance, would I be able to arrive at a farm with my RFID products, quickly set up a perimeter around a pig pen and also tag the pigs, so that I could be alerted if the animals moved outside the newly created zone?

Mojix has developed an ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) system that the company says can be designed to create a defined area. The firm employs devices that emit energy to power up the tags, and a separate receiver to receive the tags' signals. Mojix has a version of the system that can be used outdoors, but I am not sure whether it is designed to withstand the rigors of being deployed on a pig farm. A simpler option might be to create a portal at a gate, then read the tags on the pigs as they pass through the gate.
