RFID Survey Points to Optimism
Robert W. Baird & Co.'s survey of bar-code resellers suggests bar-code and RFID projects are moving forward again.
There hasn't been a lot of good news this year, so I was encouraged to see the headline "Survey Suggests Improving Trends; RFID Remains Important," in RFID Monthly, published by Reik Read of Robert W. Baird & Co.
Baird surveyed 89 bar-code resellers that sell both bar-code and RFID systems, and found an increasing number of bar-code and RFID projects moving forward, particularly in government, health care and pharmaceutical distribution. The survey also revealed an improvement in sectors that had been weak throughout the downturn, including transportation and logistics, warehousing and distribution, manufacturing and retail.
"We have continued to see pipelines built, with most emphasis continuing on asset management and inventory management," Read writes. "Field sales and service are also important applications. Mobile computing projects appear to be leading the recovery, as many of these programs can offer a quick ROI through greater efficiency, improved management or new revenue streams. New mobile deployments are generally found in manufacturing, transportation, warehousing and field service markets. We are also hearing of increasing desktop printing projects as manufacturing activity has started to increase."
Read reports that RFID is gaining traction, and that resellers are becoming more optimistic. The article suggests companies feel increasingly confident that the worst is over, and are finally beginning to move forward once more. I have recently heard this optimistic assessment from several RFID systems integrators as well.
