Can RFID Track Metal Pipes Used in Construction?

Posted By RFID Journal, 10.16.2009
Is it possible to utilize RFID tags for tracking metallic pipe spools for an outdoor construction application?

Yes, there are a variety of companies that manufacture hardened tags designed for use on pipes in the construction and energy sectors, including Intermec and Identec Solutions.

I would encourage you to view the video of Pat King's presentation from our recent RFID in Oil and Gas virtual event (see Using RFID in the World's Harshest Conditions). In this video, Pat discusses the testing involved, as well as the conditions tags must withstand in such an environment. Full disclosure: His firm designs hardened tags sold by William Fricke & Co..

You might also find some of the presentations from our RFID in Construction virtual event of interest. There were several excellent case studies discussed in that event.
