Where Can I Find RFID Fibers to Embed in Tape or Paper?

Posted By RFID Journal, 09.28.2017

Have you come across any RFID tape solutions containing small fibers that would break or be disturbed if the tape were removed—something like a trip-wire mechanism? If so, could you point me in the direction of where you may have encountered them?

Thomas,

It depends on what you are trying to do. There is a company called Inkode that makes small aluminum fibers that can be embedded in paper or tape. If you hit the fibers with RF energy, the signal that comes back has a unique signature, due to the random orientation of the fibers. If you were to cut open the box, the fibers would be rearranged. You could hit the fibers with RF energy again, which would tell you if they were different, which could then be used to signal an alarm. This could also be accomplished via video analytics.

Additionally, you could embed an RFID tag with an antenna that would break if a box were opened. The tag could then send a signal to the reader indicating it had been tampered with. There is no off-the-shelf tape product that offers this of which I'm aware, so you would need to work with a company to develop a custom solution.
