Is There Any Sort of RFID Learning Kit Available That Is Not Too Expensive?

Posted By RFID Journal, 12.02.2016

I have a college-age student who wants to experiment with RFID tags and writing programs to handle the information on them. I don't know much about this, so I don't know what's available. Any suggestions?

Sparkfun, an online electronics store that focuses on parts necessary for personal projects, offers an RFID Starter Kit for $49.95. This kit uses passive low-frequency (LF) tags. Most businesses are using longer-range passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) tags. But the kit offers a low-cost way to play around with an RFID reader and some tags and create a small project. Your student can scour YouTube for some examples of projects that others have conducted.

If your student is more serious and wants to develop an application that could serve the needs of a business, the Atlas RFID Store sells the Alien Technology Developer Kit for $2,340. This kit comes with an Alien Technology passive UHF RFID reader and passive UHF tags, as well as access to Alien's software development kit, so your student can build a sophisticated RFID solution.
